The Black Suite
Black is the Colour of Silence
The images in The Black Suite flow into the curious gaps of our understanding about the tenuous nature of life and the impact it has on the human condition physically and spiritually.
Each subject depicted is protected within a silent pocket of beautiful blackness. We fear the absence of sound as we fear the absence of life.
The works explore experiences of hedonism, nihilism and the nature of time and waiting. Notions of afterlife also weigh into the mix. Metaphors are sourced from past and present life and culture to provide the visual language, particularly contemporary evocations of the Vanitas painting tradition.
